In 2018 the Dutch city of Naarden hosted the travelling exhibition ‘Millennial Heritage of Czech Currency’, which showcases some of the most valuable items from the museum’s numismatic collection and has been created in conjunction with the University of Pardubice. The exhibition was one of a number of events held to mark the 350th anniversary of the death of the great Czech philosopher and educator Jan Amos Komenský (Comenius), who is buried in Naarden.
For its time in Naarden, the exhibition was expanded to cover two additional topics, each on their own separate exhibition panel. One of the new panels highlighted the exceptionally important role played by depictions of Comenius on 20th-century Czechoslovak and Czech currency. The second new panel was entitled ‘European Silver Thalers of the Comenius Era’, and traced the complex developments in European currency systems from the end of the 16th to the middle of the 17th century. Large numbers of Dutch silver thalers – produced using metals imported from overseas – came into circulation in the Bohemian Crown Lands during this era.
This expanded version of the original American exhibition was created in conjunction with the Comenius Museum in Uherský Brod and the National Pedagogical Museum and Library of J. A. Comenius in Prague.
